“Hey,” Emily mumbles from next to me. We are both in the locker room at the hospital, neither one of us showing any excitement to be here.

“Hey,” I match her vibe. “How’s it going?” I feel compelled to ask.

“Good. You?” She’s not meeting my eyes, and it is obvious that she’s lying.

“Great.” My voice goes up a notch, sounding strange even to my own ears. “I didn’t see you in class today,” I mention in my most casual tone.

“Yeah, I missed it.” Emily slams the door to her locker shut after fumbling with God knows what in there.

“Are you still with Steve?” I can’t help myself from asking, hoping against hope that she’ll tell me they’re not together anymore.

“Yep,” she pops the p, obviously challenging me to say more on the subject.

“How’s Puck?” I rest my shoulder against the locker and watch her thoughtfully, trying to figure out what’s going on in her pretty head.

“Great,” Emily smirks at me. “How’s Dylan?”

It’s been a week since I threw Dylan out of my house and my life. Hearing his name now cuts all the oxygen going into my lungs.

“I wouldn’t know,” I shrug, hoping that I look as nonchalant as I’m trying to portray. I throw my bag over my shoulder and slam my locker shut, then, without another word, I turn around and walk out of the room.

“Becca,” Emily’s distressed voice calls from behind me, but I refuse to acknowledge her. I am not going to let her bring me down. “Stop!” She tries again, this time closer to me. “I’m sorry,” she touches my arm and tries again.

I stop walking and she runs into me. With my eyes closed, I just keep my head down and regroup.

“It’s fine,” I tell her in a low voice. “No worries.”

“It’s not fine,” Emily sounds on the verge of tears, but I am not going to ask her what that’s about. When she’s ready to tell me anything, she’ll have to be the one coming to me with it. “I’m sorry I’ve been so insensitive,” she continues talking. “I thought you and Dylan were together…”

My head snaps back, and I meet her eyes dead on.

“We’re not together,” I grind out. “We’ve never been together. Not like you mean it.”

“I…”

“Emily,” Morgan, the bane of my friend’s existence, calls from the entrance to her office, making her roll her eyes at me before turning around to face our boss.

“Yes, Morgan,” she’s going for extremely polite. “What can I do for you?”

Morgan doesn’t buy it, but she doesn’t react in any way either.

“Room four-two-eight. Dr. Nolan needs you, stat.” With that, she turns around and walks back inside her office.

Emily lets out a big sigh. “Can I call you later when I’m out?”

“Of course,” I give her a quick smile, followed by a rushed side hug, then I turn around and walk toward the exit of the hospital.

Between the classes I am struggling to take and the work schedule I have, I wonder how much longer I can keep up this pace.
